Arte Povera (Poor Art)
Revisiting the first Installation I created at University based on the theme ‘Arte Povera’ (literally meaning Poor Art) – an art movement in Italy where artists would create art out of materials which were seen as unusable or not beautiful. My idea was to explore the theme of artist’s block and my struggle at the time to break out and find inspiration. I used glass bottles as my inspiration, and smashed them against a wall to release my frustration. I then used a frame to create a netting from clear string and suspend the glass shards within. The final installation consisted of a projection of the smashing of glass bottles against the suspended glass shards, creating an illusion of reflection.
